I arrived to assist my service user at lunch time, I started a conversation with him. For example I asked him “What did you do today?” I asked him this because it is important that the boy feels comfortable with me and relaxes. We spoke for around 10 minutes. I had to make sure the boy had some lunch. I was aware that he is a vegetarian and so I made sure that when i prepared the menu, it had 3 kinds of vegetarian dishes. I asked him what would he like to eat for lunch? I gave him 3 good options instead of one, so that he could feel empowered while he decided what he wanted to eat. Also i wanted him to feel valued, by not forcing him to eat something he does not like.

The 3 options I gave him were;

Cheese sandwhich and fruit with orange drinks

Jacket potato with bean salad , yougurt, fresh water

Vegetable & couscous salad, with friut salad , and apple juice

He chose number 1, and I asked him if he wanted me to help him, he said yes. I gave him bread, butter, a knife and a plate.

The next thing I did was to cut the cheese and put it on the bread. While I did this, I also gave him orange juice and a plastic cup.

I then sat next to him to make sure he was ok to feed himself, which he was. I made sure the food was ok for him to eat. I encouraged him to eat by himself and checked that he didn’t have any complaints about his food. Also I had a conversation with him and we talked about his hobbies, and what he liked and disliked.

After he had finished eating i encouraged him to tidy up because it is important for him to learn how to throw things away becuase it help to develop his life skill for example in fututre he know how to kee his house clean. I gave the option of either throwing things away or putting the ingredients away. It is important that he was involved in everything we did because i wanted him to feel valued and included in the decision making process.

How I found it

I found some of it quite easy as I had learnt it before, for example I learnt how to communicate well before so starting a conversation with the service user was easy. I also found making the cheese sandwich easy. I think the main reason I found it easy was that the boy was very cooperative, I know that if he had not been cooperative it would have been really hard. He could have refused to eat or not even pick one of the food options I gave him; if he did this I think I would have given him another option. I tried to encourage and talk to him so that he could cooperate. I also asked what his favourite food was and tried to get that for him.

How I could improve

At the start of the roleplay i felt that i should be more paitent, calm and relax because in the roleplay i was nervous, i was thinking that if the serivce user did not want to eat what would i do? So now i realise that it is important to be patient, calm, and relax because it helps when you do that, for example, if the serivce user kept asking the same question over and over again, it could be annoying, and you can feel like you want to shout and tell them to stop, but that is not professional. That is why you need to have the skill of patience and control your anger.

Evaluation

I have learnt so much about practical care, feeding, mobility aids, clothing, and quality of care. I have found some of it difficult and some of it easy because there were some new words that I had never heard of before which I had to research to understand and learn them. I am improving my knowledge and understanding by remembering new vocabulary and researching new things. I have learnt more about people and their individual needs (likes and dislikes) and how to manage them. I try to do everything myself first, before I ask for help.

If I had the opportunity to do it differently I would definitely expand more on what I wanted to say and explain everything in more detail.

Cover Letter

                                                                                          Fatima Ibrahim

(Witnessed by Vicky)

Patience

I need patience when I am working with down syndrome girls because they may learn slow.

Understanding

I show understanding by working with down syndrome girls and I don’t shout at her because it upset her and must do different ways

Empathy

I showed empathy by talking to her and understanding how she felt

Respect

I show respect by working with down syndrome girl because she have special need education and does not have same advantages as other

Willingness

I showed I was happy to work with her by getting involved with all her work and supporting her

Sense of humour

I encouraged the student to be happy by having a sense of humuor, I told her jokes and tried to help her laugh at things

Cheerfulness

I smiled alot and danced with the student to make her happy

In this picture: I ask the 8 yr old boy to help out and share...

In this picture: I ask the 8 yr old boy to help out and share the cleaning up once he had finished eating. I did this so that he will learn how to do these things himself for in the future. I made sure I didn’t upset him but just explained clearly in a friendly way that it is important that he must share tasks if they are easy for him to do such as throw things in the bin. He is not allow to use a knife because it is dangerous for him to do that as he can hurt him self. I learnt how to share tasks and what he was and was not allowed to do because it shows that everyone can help out. So they will learn by them self.

In this picture: I was the care worker who had to look after a...

In this picture: I was the care worker who had to look after a service user of 8 year old boy who is vegetarian, firstly I spoke to the boy and asked him what lunch he would like. I gave him three choices, he choose to have a cheese sandwich and an orange drink, I also spoke to him and asked if he was alright. While I was helping him to eat his lunch we talked and I learnt hoe the care worker must be patient and became aware of simple mistakes it would be easy to make, for example; the care worker could have given him pork, which he would not be allowed to eat as he is vegetarian. Through this I learnt to be patient, have respect and manners. In the picture I was having conversation with the 8 yr old boy, we had a good conversation talking about school, what hobbies he liked and finding out what its like to be an 8 yr old boy. I think I could improve as I ralise I didn’t show that I was confident and it is useful to be confident because it makes it easier to start conversations with the service user and show that you care.

STAFF OBSERVATION SHEET

Skills and qualities Grade Targets

CLOTHING

In this task, I was the care worker who had to look after a service user which was an old lady who had mobility problems and profoundly deaf. To care for this person correctly it is very important for the care worker to know how to use sign language when communicating with a deaf people; otherwise it will create a communication a barrier.

I prefer to ask my service user what clothe does they want to wear when they are getting dressed so that they do not have feelings of hopelessness. I ask my service user if she wanted to go to bingo and she agreed I wanted to show her that I respected her view/opinions. Also I wanted to understand what old people are like, for example, are they any good with change? Are they rude or kind? Can the move around easily?

It is important to use the theory from my course and put it into practice; I felt this scenario helped with this. With all the things I have learnt I have to be sure that you can do it, because in future I might want be the care worker.

I like working in a team so that we can support each other in our work, for example, if I had to lift a service user from their bed to a chair and they were too heavy for me, I would ask another care worker to help me; and I would do the same for them

In the video you will see that one of the service users was rude, she was shouting and interrupting my work and other care workers, when I was helping another service user. I felt that it was important to tell this rude service user to calm down and wait until someone can attend to you. However, I think in the future it would be better to remove this service user from the room so that she does not upset other service users.

I think it was useful for me because it showed me what kind of mobility disasters can happen and it helped me to understandwhat can go wrong. As you can see from the video there are a lot of mistakes, for example, the care worker refused to help me up when I had been tripped over; i felt shocked, angry, upset and embarassed. i think the carer should have showed more empathy and care. instead of just watching me struggle to stand up she should have helped me get up and be more caring. she was not professional. when i was in the wheelchair i wanted to see a picture on the board, but the carer ignored me and carried on walking past it, it made me feel as if i was not important and that my feelings did not matter; instead of feeling empowered i felt demoralised, ignored, useless and angry. I think the carer should have respected my wishes so that we could have a good relationship. when a service user wanted to go through the door the carer went first and did not hold the door so that the service user could go through safely and the door slammed into her wheelchair. This was bad practice; the carer should have let the service user go first whilst the carer kept the door open and made sure the service user went through safely. There was a service user struggling to go upstairs with a zimmer frame and the carer was no where in sight. This was not good the carer should have taken the service user to a lift or use a ramp. The qualities I would want the care workers to have good respect, empathy, kind, cheerful, helpful.

Empowerement Scerario

Mobility Aids Also called: Ambulation devices

Mobility aids help you walk or move from place to place if you are disabled or have an injury. They include crutches, canes, walkers, wheelchairs and motorized scooters. You may need a walker or cane if you are at risk of falling. If you need to keep your body weight off your foot, ankle or knee, you may need crutches. You may need a wheelchair or a scooter if an injury or disease has left you unable to walk.

WHEELCHAIR

A wheelchair is a wheeled mobility device in which the user sits. The device is propelled either manually (by turning the wheels by the hand) or via various automated systems. Wheelchairs are used by people for whom walking is difficult or impossible due to illness (physiological or physical), injury, or disability. People with both sitting and walking disability often need to use a wheelbench

A crutch is a medical tool used in the event that one’s leg or legs may be injured or unable to support weight. and it help when person using cruches for example,
